Look!! You Can Fit Two Spies In A PHONE BOOTH!!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

By the time this hits theaters, I think Fox is banking on Colin Farrell having finally broken through as a star. Right now, he’s that guy who is hovering right there on the verge of it.

Let’s see what our first spy thought of the flick:

Hey Guys--

This will be my second spy-job for you...hope it's useful.

Well last night I had the good fortune to check out a test screening of the film "Phone Booth". I'm sure you're familiar witht he plot, but for those new to the scene, here's the skinny: A self-absorbed PR rep, played by Colin Farrel, is in the phone booth on 8th St in NYC and receives a mysterious phone call. The person on the other end of the line basically is in one of the surrounding buildings and has a sniper rifle aimed right at him. He leaves the phone booth, he dies. That's it in a nutshell.

Now let me preface this review by saying this...I HATE JOEL SCHUMACHER. HATE. In my opinion, he completely DESTROYED the Batman films and to this day "Batman & Robin" is my all-time most despised piece of cinematic tiolet paper. My disgust ran so deep I went so far as to boycott all Schumacher's films since. (Akiva Goldsman....dont think I've forgotten about YOU...)

Well, after seeeing Phone Booth...my boycott of all things Schumacher has come to an end. This film is fantastic. I was quite amazed at how such a seemingly basic plot could keep me riveted and in suspense for a full hour and a half, but it did. I think this was helped through the interesting way it was shot. The camera almost never leaves Colin Farrel while he's in th phone booth. Thie is accomplished by a picture-in-picture type effect where when Farrel is talking to someone on the phone, for example, the person would be in a little window in another part of the screen. (Kind of similar to the show "24")

And Colin Farrel....OWNS THIS MOVIE! I've really only seen him in "Minority Report" but heard he's this "next big thing". Well I think this movie will cement his staus as an actor to be reckoned with. If he doesnt work, this film doesn't work. It's truly amazing to see this guy keep you interested the whole way through and almost all his interaction is with a PHONE! (Of course you hear the voice on the other end, which I won't mention hear but is quite recognizable...;-)

I suppose I could go on....there were some really funny moments in here as well. The female characters weren't really anything to get too excited about. ( OK it is damn near impossible NOT to get excited about Katie Holmes, I grant you...) The movie really is all about Colin Farrel and how he makes it through this ordeal and what it does to him in the end. Really quality stuff all around!

Oh...and the name's Sonic Death Monkey!

From the colorfully named Sonic Death Monkey to the rather simple Martin...

Martin here. Went to a screening in Marina del Rey Last night.

This is my second contribution. Haven't seen anything on the film "Phone Booth" directed by Joel Schumacher, on the site this morning so here it is:

"Phone Booth" is about an PR agent (Played by Colin Farrell) who is one crass SOB. He plays it greatly. He's sarcastic, mean, egotitical, but all that changes after making his usual call from a New York City phone booth, he recieves a call from a mysterious pyscho. Who happens to know a lot about Colin's character. (Can't remember the character's name).

The pyscho turns out to be a killer with a sniper rifle and instructs Colin's character not to hang up or he'll be killed. Soon the police show up and all hell breaks loose. Forest Whitaker plays the Captain trying to figure out what has happened.

It also stars Katie Holmes in a very small role, thank god, did anyone attend the "Abandon" screening, I digress.

The film is short, sweet and to the point. Although, one thing that detracted from it was (and this is for any film geek that knows an actors voice when he hears it) that you know who the sniper is as soon as you here the voice. Maybe they can doctor up the voice an make it more unrecognizable.

The ending was typical of Hollywood and has been done to death by films in the past. But as a whole I strongly recommend catching this flick in the theatre when it comes out.

You can call me Martin. Later.

Hmmm... I still wonder when we’re actually going to lay eyes on the film. Anyone got a date on this one?

"Moriarty" out.
