A Quick Review Of THE RECRUIT!! Pacino!! Colin Farrell!! Spies!! Lots of Exclamation Points!!!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

Nice timing, dude. Didn't this one used to be called THE FARM?

Hey Harry,

With all the hype surrounding Colin Farrell as the new Dark Knight I thought you’d be interested in another one of his upcoming flicks, “The Recruit” with Al Pacino which I sceened last night.

Farrell plays John Clayton, an MIT student savvy in computer technology and bar mixology who is recruited by CIA Guru William Burke (Pacino) to enlist as a CIA operative. Reluctant because of his father’s mysterious CIA-related death, Clayton declines. But after a healthy dollop of Pacino-charm the future Gotham-ite finds himself at “The Farm”, training grounds for America’s elite. Here, we learn that “nothing is as it seems” as we vicariously train with Clayton in the arts of espionage. Clayton meets and falls for a fellow trainee, Layla, played by the criminally hot Bridget Moynahan, which ultimately leads to his expulsion from The Farm. The second-half of the film involves Clayton using his new skills when Burke re-enlists him on a deep undercover mission to root out a mole within CIA headquarters.

With quality actors and an interesting premise you would think this would be a proper-package, but “Nothing is as it seems” couldn’t be more precise. The film tries to throw so many red herrings that things get fishy quick and the unpredictability becomes more predictable than Monday Night Raw. By the midpoint it is easy to see where this film is going and it becomes a bore to watch Clayton go through the motions. There are aspects of the film to be commended, it does a decent job of teasing you at first and that the audience doesn’t know anything more than the hero creates a few nice surprises but overall the film is a clunker.

I’ve wasted enough time on this film, hopefully you won’t. I’m off to ImDB to start my Moynahan mural, I hear drool makes a nice adhesive.

If you feel the need, you can call me THE BEAD.

PS: Do you need a “Ring” Review? I’m always down for Naomi Watts even if she isn’t climbing Mt. Laura-Elena...I’ve got passes for tomorrow night-let me know.

Yes. Check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks for this one.

"Moriarty" out.
