Christophe Gans on THE ADVENTURER & DANGER DIABOLIK Remake!

Hey folks, Harry here... Now that I have the sacred All Region - All Format translating super duper DVD player, I can't wait to dig into the 3 DVD BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF French discs... Giddy as a schoolboy actually. And I can't wait to see what Gans does next. I mean, this guy can kick some major ass, especially with Mark Dacascos - (Why MARVEL isn't getting a RED WOLF movie going with this guy is beyond me.) But here's Morphic with all the details on Gans and Dacascos....

CHRISTOPHE GANS' THE ADVENTURER, DANGER: DIABOLIK REMAKE & MARK DACASCOS

wtf ?A "French Indiana Jones"?

Well hellooo Harry,

Morphic here with an interesting bit of 'news' on that sadly under-covered French director we all love. Gather around...

Now, I must admit I didn't particularly care for BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF beyond the greatcinematography and Mark Dacascos' stunning action scenes. You know, after I saw the horrible CGI of "The Beast" for the first time, BAM! it took me straight out of the movie and it ruined the whole experience for me... I hate The Beastwith a passion. I'd take the Spider-Man CGI over this any day... It's 'bad CGI' redefined.

Nevertheless it was good to see Gans' finally getting some well deserved worldwide attention for his work. And it seems to have paid off for him. Thanks to the tremendous success of BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF Universal Pictures is supporting the French director's next movie 'THE ADVENTURER'. It tells the story of the 'French Indiana Jones' BOB MORANE, a WWII reporter with ties to the British Intelligence. 'Huh!? Bob who?' Damnit Yankees, Bob Morane,onlythe most popular hero in France. The books and comics are *very* popular overhere in Europe. The movie is described as a supernatural fantasy, (so it has Gans' name written all over it). and YES! Dacascos is apparently back on board!

I happen to come across this a report on Fangoria.com:

--

"Gans has just finished writing the third draft of the ADVENTURER screenplay with his BROTHERHOOD collaborator STEPHANE CABEL ; with a planned $70-million-plus budget, the supernatural fantasy is based on three Morane books featuring a Fu Manchu-type villain called the Golden Shadow. “I’ve taken ‘Golden Shadow,’ ‘The Revenge of the Golden Shadow’ and ‘The Punishment of the Golden Shadow’ and combined them all into one exciting epic set in ’50s London and Burma during that country’s decolonization,” he reveals. “Basically, Bob must vanquish the Golden Shadow, an archfiend with incredible hypnotic powers, who uses trained martial arts assassins and Chinese black magic to summon ghosts and demons in his world-domination plans. The two become sworn enemies when the Golden Shadow’s niece falls in love with Bob.”

Although Universal will have final casting approval, Gans hopes they will go for his suggestion of using two of his BROTHERHOOD leads. “I want VINCENT CASSEL (THE CRIMSON RIVER) as Bob,” the director says, “and Mark Dacascos to play not the Golden Shadow, but another Asian character I have invented. The main problem with adapting the stories is that they are all quite racist in retrospectall dark-skinned natives were bad guys. Mark will play a more ambivalent go-between character to redress the balance. Cassel’s wife, MONICA BELLUCI, is also in the running for a major part if she finishes the MATRIX sequels in time. "

“We are aiming to start shooting in London in November before moving on to Burmese locations,” Gans continues. “Because the fourth Indiana Jones movie has been delayed yet again, I think THE ADVENTURER has a good chance of filling the gap. One thing I do promise--it’s going to be one very wild and creepy ride, and it won’t end up looking like BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA!”

--

The report also mentions a possible remake by Gans' of MARIA BAVA's DANGER: DIABOLIK! Yeah.. cringe... ButChristophe sums it up like this;

“Look, I love the film as much as anyone,” Gans says, “but it was much more a James Bond/Batman parody, the vogue of the time, rather than anything to do with the original Italian comic book. The rights to the character somehow ended up at Studio Canal+ when the original creators, Milanese sisters ANGELA and LUCIANA GIUSSANI, died, so it’s an ideal situation. The idea is to get a writer like DONALD [THE GRIFTERS] WESTLAKE to take the character and place him in an erotic, very adult caper movie as far away from any Austin Powers feel as possible.

“Again, I’d love MARK DACASCOS to play Diabolik, and MONICA BELLUCI would make the perfect Eva. I’m also thinking of Deborah DEBORAH KARA [CRASH] UNGER to play the KGB assassin the Black Widow, and someone like BILLY CRUD UP for the part of Inspector Gekko--although in the comic, he and Diabolik are mirror images of each other. I want this sort of stunningly beautiful and handsome cast involved in a classy, clever caper, with darkly perverse relationships and all doing thrilling stunts. The Bava film is unique and I’d never, ever want to copy it. But let’s see where we can take Diabolik today for a totally new and different pop art experience.”
