The story broke in the trades yesterday. SPY HUNTER is going to be a movie, and The Rock is going to star in it.
Here’s a case where the source material is, more than anything, just a name. I remember loving the game in the arcade, but it’s not a story-heavy experience. It’s basically just... driving.
That opens the premise up to Universal and Chuck Gordon and Prime Universe doing pretty much anything. I hope they have fun with it. I’ve had some respected writers and directors in town tell me that they’re convinced The Rock is going to be the real deal, a movie star, and that it all just depends on how good his material is.
Let’s see a balls to the wall spy film free of the restrictions of being part of a long-dead franchise like Bond. This is what I want from xXx, and it’s what I would want from this film.
We’ll keep our ear to the ground and be sure to tell you when they sign a writer or director.
