Capone tells those in Chicago About The Coolest Thing To Hit Town Since Those Giant Grasshoppers Back in 1957

Harry here... I hate Capone and it is really sad that his ticket to BNAT 4 has just been sold.... sissafrassafrishafrassss... Argh, me like the sounds of this event. Couldn't go if I wanted. Blasted Chinese Government!

Hey, Harry. Capone here with big, big, big news for all of you Chicago-area horror fans. How’s this for a list of special guest speakers all in one place? Bruce Campbell and “the Ladies of THE EVIL DEAD (Betsy Baker, Ellen Sandwiss, and Sarah York); Tom Sullivan (special effects and make-up wizard for the first two EVIL DEAD films); Herschell Gordon Lewis; Richard Kiel (Jaws from MOONRAKER); Ben Chapman (the dude in the CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON suit); Felissa Rose, star of SLEEPAWAY CAMP; Conrad Brooks (star of many of Ed Woods finest films); and the list goes on. It’s basically a midnight movie geeks wet dream. “What the hell are you talking about, Capone?” you ask.

I’m talking about a newly created horror and sci-fi film festival called “Flashback Weekend Horror and Sci-Fi Convention” taking place Aug. 2-4 at the Chicago Marriott O’Hare and the historic 1400-seat Pickwick Theatre. Details of the events and registration information and prices can be found on the Flashback Weekend web site (www.flashbackweekend.com) but let me give you a few highlights:

• Bruce Campbell and the three female co-stars of THE EVIL DEAD will do intros and Q&A for a 20th anniversary screening of THE EVIL DEAD. Bruce is also doing a book signing for his “If Chins Could Kill” paperback and taking part in a panel discussion on independent filmmaking during the course of the weekend. He will also host a special 15th Anniversary showing of EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN. As part of this EVIL DEAD celebration, special effects artist Tom Sullivan will bring his EVIL DEAD museum, featuring original props from the films.

• The Godfather of Gore himself, the legendary Herschell Gordon Lewis, will be on hand for various signings, discussions, and to host a screening of TWO THOUSAND MANIACS!

• CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, the 35mm director’s cut/print. Uncensored, unrated, banned for more than 20 years on most planets, this may be the most controversial film of all time.

• SLEEPAWAY CAMP screening--with former child-star of the film Felissa Rose on hand.

• A new horror film called JIGSAW (I don’t know anything about it, but the story sounds good.)

• MOONRAKER screening--with Jaws himself, Richard Kiel in attendance.

• MAD MONSTER PARTY--The Rankin-Bass stop-motion animation classic, with Boris Karloff lending his vocal talents. A rare 35mm print.

• THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON--in friggin’ 16mm 3-D!!!

According to the schedule, most of the signings, meet-and-greets, panel discussions, as well as an exhibition/dealer hall will take place in the afternoons at the Marriott. Attendees will be bussed the 5 minutes it takes to get to the Pickwick for the screenings in the evenings. Again, check the web site for details, but please don’t e-mail me. I’m not organizing this deal. Having said that, I believe I’m on tap to host and/or moderate parts of this event (not sure which ones yet); and I will definitely be attending as many discussions and screenings as is humanly possible. See you all there.
