What's on Spielberg's Slate

Ok, so ya saw SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, and you are shaking uncontrollably at Spielberg's awesome filmmaking abilities, and ya need to know everything he's contemplating on making right now. Well, here ya go, Good work Viv Savage on spotting this interview!

Love the site man. I was reading the internet edition of my former home town paper, The Hartford Courant, and I found some excerpts from an interview with Steven Spielberg. A quick check of the site saw that it had not yet been posted, so I thought I'd send it on over. In case I need a name, call me

Viv Savage.

Spielberg on Spielberg

On making a movie musical:

"It's very, very high on my list. Quincy Jones and I have been talking about a number of things. It would be a contemporary musical which is shamelessly Rodgers & Hammerstein. It will be a movie that when you talk, you talk and when you sing, you sing. But I haven't found a [story] yet. The best musicals have the best stories. The best musicals, if you cut out the music, you still have a wonderful story to tell. The worst musicals are when you take the music out you've got nothing."

On his next project:

"I'm directing [the film version of] 'Memoirs of a Geisha' [by Arthur Golden] starting in January with an all-Asian cast. I love the book so much. I'm very reactive. I read 'Saving Private Ryan' one day and I just knew I wanted to direct it. It somehow fit. And when I read 'Geisha' it somehow fit, too. What hit me about 'Geisha' was the fierce competitiveness between both geisha houses. And I love learning about different cultures."

On projects beyond that:

"[The script to] 'The Notebook' [by Nicholas Sparks] is being rewritten right now. I don't know whether or when we will have a draft that I would like to direct. Tom Cruise was never attached to the project. But we have decided in the next 24 months we will do something together."

On another "Indiana Jones":

"Yes, there will be another 'Indiana Jones.' We don't have a start date for it because we still don't have a script, but we do have an idea of what type of villain it should be, but it won't be a Nazi. Everyone's on board for the picture but don't look for it for a couple of years."
