Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
It’s a quickie, but I thought it was worth taking another look at how early response is shaping up on the Sandler film that will have to hold us over until we see PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE.
Anyway, the spoiler free version is that Mr. Deeds is a funny, white bread, mainstream comedy. While do you still see bits of the act that made Sandler famous, he has homogenized his persona to appeal to every type of person. But, it still works. You can bring just about anyone to this movie, and they will get some laughs out of it. However, if your looking for the type of guy who beat the crap out of Bob Barker, just rent Sandlers old stuff.
Now the spoiler version:
Sandler is a small town joe who runs a pizza joint. He is kind and helpful to everyone, including "Mr. Crazy Eyes" who starts the movie in jail. Turns out he is the next to kin to a Ted Turner type who owns just about everything.
Meanwhile, Wynoa (looking really, really hot through the entire movie) is a tabloid TV reporter needing a scoop or she's fired. She learns of Sandler, and reinvents herself to meet his "ideal women in peril." They meet, they laugh, Sandler beats guys up for laughs (including a funny cameo by John Macenroe), they "Date Movie" part of the picture kicks in at full force.
Later its discovered that she is indeed a reporter, but yet she loves him (predictable, no?). He sells his company off to the evil corporate raiders, only to return 20 minutes later and reclaim the company from liquidation.
Again, its a funny movie. However, Sandler seems to step aside, and allow his supporting players get the most laughs. The butler steals the picture.
Overall, a good date movie, or a great matinee.
