If you’re planning to catch next week’s supersized Jim Cameron-directed “Dark Angel,” you’re probably going to want to catch tonight’s serviceable installment, which not only sets up the finale but delves a into the family tree of the shadowy Sandeman – the Manticore mastermind who created Max, Alec, dog-boy Joshua and the rest of the show’s superhuman transgenics.

Dark Angel 1.20 FAQ
What's it called?
Dark Angel 1.20 FAQ
What's it called?
"Love Among the Runes"
Who's responsible?
Teleplay is credited to Moria Kirland (“Designate This,” “Rising”) and Jose Molina (“Rising”).
Is next week the season finale?
Sho' Nuff... 90 minutes, Directed by King of The World James Cameron
What does TV Guide say?
"A bogus transgen lures Max into White's trap, where she learns the truth about the mystery marks appearing on her skin; the Terminal City dwellers mount a campaign to battle the humans hunting them down; Alec learns why Logan has been keeping his distance from his former friends"
So who is this "bogus transgen" guy?
His name is CJ, an escaped lunatic from the Breeding Cult (familliars) private loony bin?
What is TV Guide not telling us?
CJ is the son of the "Father" of all the transgenics, Sandeman.
Sandeman? That guy who runs the CDC, who took such an interest in Max during "Harbor Lights"
One and the same
So he was part of the breeding cult too?
Indeed, he actually started Manticore, figuring the selective breeding eugenics of the Familliars was too strict, and Genetic Engineering was the way.
What about these weird tattoo things on Max's skin?
Some sort of runes that designate her as some sort of chosen one, a fact that makes Aames White none too happy.
So are Max and Alec outed at Jam Pony?
They have not become Persona non grata at the place they work, although, a third X-5 turns up to work there, then is sacrificed to an angry mob of transgen haters, like so many guys in red shirts on Star Trek. This raises the attention of the government goons.
So Normal knows about Max and Alec? No more Gladiator dreams?
No, cutie pie Original Cindy gets the personnel records of Max and Alec out before the Men in Black find them. Although Sketchy does find out.
The big news?
There is so much, Inviso-text for the supreme spoiler! Aames White's is Sandeman's other son!
What's good?
The pacing, the sense of urgency, Jessica Alba in chains, having her clothes ripped off! Alec jousting bad guys with a big chunk of pipe! Joshua going from cocker spaniel to rottweiler on the guys who killed his X-5 friend Biggs! All the revelations, getting us ready for the finale!
What's not so good?
It's an episode made for continuity people, the romantic tension between Max/Logan/Alec never has a time to really get hot, with all the stuff they have to do for next week, and feels a little forced.
How does it end?
"I'll find her. Now that I know what she is, I have to!"
