Hey folks, Harry here... Since hearing that this film won Brussels, I've been doing a bit of research on this. The producers that made this are the same folks that have the rights to Mario Bava's film library. Also, I've heard that this flick doesn't have a U.S. distributor even though it has a world wide release. Here's our first review of the film, but I'm expecting some others soon. Here ya go...
Hey Harry,
I'm a regular visitor to the site but haven't had anything to write in about, until now. Over the past weekend I attended the "Dead by Dawn" horror film festival at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh, and the closing film was "Dog Soldiers" - what a cracking movie!
The basic setup is this - a group of British soldiers are up in the wilds of Scotland on an exercise when they discover what is left of their opposing team torn to shreds except for one badly injured guy. They're attacked by a group of creatures (the movie doesn't let on just yet what they are but it's kind of obvious) and have to make a run for it, ending up barricaded in an old farmhouse surrounded by werewolves with a rapidly depleting supply of ammo and a couple of injured team members who could turn wolfy on them at any minute.
One of the things that makes this movie is the absolutely hilarious dialogue between the grunts which flies thick and fast. These guys are hard as nails and make sure everyone knows it.
Don't get me wrong, this ain't winning any Oscars, it has some *very* cheesy moments but for sheer entertainment value it's thumbs up all the way. From the moment the squad is attacked in the woods to the final showdown it just never lets up.
Think "Aliens" with werewolves and that should give you and idea of what the film is like. Four stars out of five from me.
According to the IMDB this movie gets a UK release on the 10th May, no mention of a US release. I was surprised no-one had sent anything on this movie (apparently it had a preview in London last September), I did a quick search on your site but didn't find anything so hopefully this review is of some use to you.
Cheers,
"Crooky"
