Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
I've talked about this film till I'm blue in the face. So has John Robie. Last night, when we were on our way to the cast and crew screening of BETTER LUCK TOMORROW, the film that MTV Films picked up at Sundance this year, we were playing the SCRATCH soundtrack in the car, loud. It is a great, textured, unrelenting collection of tracks from the film that gives you a good idea of what it's like to see the movie. Still... it's just an idea. You've got to see the movie itself.
Doug Pray, who also made the excellent documentary HYPE!, is going to be at the Nuart tonight and Saturday night for both the 7:30 and the 9:50 shows, and he'll be joined by Brad Blondheim, one of the film's producers. If you go tonight, you'll see Z-Trip perform live before the film, and if you go on Saturday, beat junkies will be performing. This ties in to what these guys have planned for this spring, when they actually mount a full-sized tour to support the film, made up of all sorts of musicians, different line-ups on each coast. They're genuinely working overtime to get out the word on this amazing musical subculture, tirelessly figuring out new ways to make the release of this film more than just another arthouse platform schedule. They're reaching across different media to try any number of things, and it's great fun to watch unfold. SCRATCH is, of course, an amazing documentary on the turntablists movement in modern music. It's great stuff, alive and vital, and ended up in the top five for the year on my Best Of List for 2001. I originally reviewed it HERE and John Robie's excellent review for it can be found HERE. You should definitely go check out THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE and see what the press has been writing about this movie. You should also check out those tour dates. I know I'm hoping to attend the LA dates for the thing. This weekend, though, if you're in LA, you owe it to yourself to get your ass out to the theater for this one and experience that Dolby 5.1 surround mix for yourself. It's awesome.
"Moriarty" out.
