Copernicus gives us the lowdown on Banner's Lab!!!

Harry here, with AICN's own super-scientist... Copernicus. He's currently in contact with particles and stars and is blowing stuff up in galaxies far from here. He's currently on call for HULK watching! SO here's Copernicus... he's got to get back to his Gamma bomb...

Harry,

Copernicus here. Oh damn that would be cool if they film the HULK here at Lawrence Berkeley Lab -- the very lab where I work! The lab is on a hill overlooking Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco. There are around a hundred buildings up here, doing such things as astrophysics (me), the Human Genome Project, energy research, particle physics, high energy physics, really too many things to name.

The building they are talking about using, the Advanced Light Source, would be perfect. First of all, it is the most distinctive building, and the symbol for LBL. It is the round building in the pictures. Yes, that is the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, which would make for a spectacular establishing shot. On most clear days you can see it much better than you can in that picture. Plus, the building has a great history. It used to house the 184 inch cyclotron, where all kinds of Nobel prize winning research was done (there have been 9 Nobel laureates from the lab).

But even better than the looks and history of the building is the fact that what really goes on in there is the kind of stuff that created the Hulk in the first place! We all know that the Hulk was created when he was bombarded by gamma rays, and inside that building is the most advanced X-ray source in the world (X-rays are the next closest thing to gamma rays in energy). In other words, if there were a real Bruce Banner, that is where he would work. I do hope they go with the gamma-ray origins for the Hulk, but I have heard rumors that they might go with some kind of genetic engineering origin. While that would make sense from a "fear of the day" standpoint, I think it would ignite another organic vs. mechanical web shooter type debate. Anyway, we have genetics research here too, but not in the same building.

I have attached some pictures showing aerial views of LBL looking east and west, as well as some pictures of some of the equipment inside the ALS building. There are pieces of machinery like that all over the place, so they might not even have to build much of a set. There is more about what it looks like inside the ALS here: CLICK HERE
