Seaman Quint Digs Into Verhoeven With His Navel Squanching Super Powers!

Hey folks, Harry here with that scurvy squancher of the seven seas, that's right folks, eat a lime lest ye barnacles be scalloped like dem dar potatoes. Quint's signing in with a scoop and a story and right darn tootin reality look at what Paul Verhoeven has upon his plate to munch upon, to shoot and to film. Personally my dream is to see Paul shoot CRUSADE, but for some reason I think we may never see that film... tis a shame too, one of the best unproduced scripts ever. Travesty. Well, that doesn't mean that Verhoeven has nothing to offend thine eyes with... Here we go...

Ahoy, squirts. 'Tis I, the fully rested and ready for action ol' seaman, Quint, here to give you folks a peek of what everybody's favorite Crazy Dutchman is up to. This info comes from within the whirlwind and chaos that is Verhoeven and what he leaves behind in his wake. Verhoeven and his many up in the air projects have been in the news lately. A true sequel to RoboCop? Looks like a definite possibility, according to the General.

Trust General Sternwood, let him fill you in all things Verhoeven (and I do mean ALL THINGS VERHOEVEN). Personally, all these projects sound interesting, but there's a very big part of me that is just giddy at Verhoeven helming another RoboCop flick. But, then again, I am a geek, afterall.

Here's the General!

AICN recently published an interview with Paul Verhoeven where he discussed the possibility of directing a sequel to "Robocop." This doesn't seem to me to be too far-fetched: Hollywood is betting mostly on sure things like sequels these days, and Verhoeven needs a sure-fire hit after his last three films fizzled at the box office.

AICN also had a scoop last week about Verhoeven directing his first "European" film since "The Fourth Man." I believe this is an adaptation of a Guy de Maupassant story that he's been trying to find financing for and while it's set in Europe, the script is in English.

Other Verhoeven projects (by no means a complete list):

"Variety" reported two other Verhoeven projects in the past year or so: a drama about the U.S. and U.S.S.R. competing for prized Nazi scientists at the end of World War II (not a sequel to Verhoeven's "Soldier of Orange," as some have suggested) that looked for awhile to be Verhoeven's next project and a biopic about Rasputin, the infamous Russian priest, which seems to have stalled.

The Rasputin biopic may come as a surprise if people know Verhoeven only as the ham-handed directed of vulgar, unintentionally funny sci-fi epics like "Hollow Man" and soft-core porn like "Showgirls". Verhoeven is a member of an international organization of scholars, historians, artists, etc. called the "Jesus Committee" that has been examining the life of Christ and generating controversial (in scholarly circles, at least) books on the subject. Not surprisingly, Verhoeven's been trying to get a life of Christ project off the ground. He's also been developing other projects about religious figures, mystics and spiritualists. Besides the Rasputin project (Rasputin was a mystic and was also, according to legend, gargantuanly endowed--perhaps another reason Verhoeven was drawn to the subject), Verhoeven was developing a project about Houdini for Tom Cruise (Houdini spent much of his life debunking spiritualists) which, after being put into turnaround, ended up with Ang Lee. And finally he's been developing a life of the American spiritualist Victoria Woodhull for Nicole Kidman which was thrown into question when Ms. Kidman divorced the film's co-producer, Mr. Cruise (Verhoeven is said to be writing the newest draft himself).

Call me General Sternwood.

There you have it, folks. I'll be back very, very soon with a net fulla coolness. 'Til that day, landlubbers, this is Quint bidding you all a fond farewell and adieu.

-Quint
