Harry here with the impending train wreck that some poor fools are actually anticipating (who? The L.A. Times preview people are excited about this, but blah on BLADE 2... That's the L.A. TImes for ya!) And whew baby, this sounds like a malt liquor movie... JOY!
Dignan here.
Long time, first time, and all that other S#$t.
I just had the immense misfortune of seeing the new film QUEEN OF THE DAMNED, based on the novel by Anne Rice. I now see why Warner Bros has been sitting on this one for a good year and a half or so.
A quick spoiler free plot summary: Vampire Lestat awakens after centuries of sleep with a hunger for a lil' of the rock and or roll. His mysterious history turns on every TRL Carson Daly-loving 15 year old Goth wannabe, and he becomes a super famous rock star. This infuriates the other vampires, who still exist in the shadows, so they try to kill him. Things get even zanier when Akasha, an ancient super-vampire comes back from the dead and tries to take over the world.
So, now that that's out of the way lemme be the first to tell you.....STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS FILM. It feels like some lame high school production of an Anne Rice novel that some pimply AV geek just happened to be filming.
Everything in this film reeks of amateurism. It is a low budget outline of the novel with absolutely none of the life and substance that the author puts in her books. (This is what many believe at least, I'm not really much of a fan) Everything is sub-par.
Performances: Stuart Townsend as Lestat. The chicks should dig him, but he is totally void of any personality or any, well, anything.
Aaliyah: Unfortunately this film is what we will have to remember her by. Who knows what she could have done in future movies, but here she is given absolutely nothing to do.
Vincent Perez: Well, his performance here makes his turn in that godawful Crow sequal look like Brando in his prime.
Everything else, from the visuals to the dialogue, is done with all the skill and enthusiasm of a Joel Schumacher Toyota Trucks commercial.
Avoid like your life depends on it.
