Harry here, and this sounds like a helluva good movie. Memento Man was a great source last year and it is great to see him back. This is the first film directed by John Malkovich and it sounds like he's done an excellent job. I'd love to hear more on this film by others. Very cool!
Hey Harry!
This is Memento Man, checking back in with you for more scoops at the Sundance Film Festival. (As you remember from last year, I was the one the brought you the good news on many happening films up here, including some of my favorites from last year like MEMENTO and WAKING LIFE.)
Tonight I just got back from seeing the John-Malkovich-directed film THE DANCER UPSTAIRS. It was a nice (occasionally disturbing) little thriller about a police captain who helps foil a Latin American revolution. Javier Bardem gave a poignant performance as the police captain who strikes back against these revolutionaries who string up dead dogs and send small children on suicide missions to make their point. This was a good follow-up to his oscar nominated BEFORE NIGHT FALLS from last year: two very different films. (It was also fun to see him in the audience tonight, along with Robert Redford who made an appearance.)
Malkovich's Q and A afterwards was quite funny. When somebody asked him why he switched over to directing from acting, he replied, "So I can come in to the shoot later and not have to spend so much wig time." Another questioner wondered if the film had been influenced by the events surrounding Sep. 11th. Malkovich responded that he had been working on this film for about five years now and that he had never, in that time, called to consult Mr. bin Laden.
