Harry here... some how a funny coming of age college flick just isn't what I'm in the mood for right now. Curse this preoccupation in me noggin... STOP THINKING ABOUT IT... I contemplate turning off the Howard Shore score, but then realize... I no longer have the will power to do it....
Hey,
I read the site pretty frequently and thought I'd send in my thoughts on "Orange County" which I saw an advance rough-cut preview of tonight. It's the new movie with Jack Black, Colin Hanks and a host of cameos like Kevin Kline, Ben Stiller, Lily Tomlin, John Lithgow and others.
I thought it was alright although I really don't think Colin Hanks should be leading any more movies. But luckily, every time Jack Black is on-screen the movie lights up. The audience was obviously there for Black because everytime he did anything the audience laughed and cheered. Unless you are a Black devotee, this is definitely a video pick.
My favorite moment was when Black (a burnt out druggie) breaks into the Stanford admissions office - long story - and gets caught by this female clerk. She says something like, "How about if I call the safety patrol" and he says, "How about if I get naked and we start the revolution." The audience cracked up and as I write this, I wonder how many other actors could have made the line that funny. Not many.
If they would have revolved the movie around Black and not Hanks they would be looking at a comedy classic. As it is they will have a hard-to-define, middle of the road movie.
By the way, of the cameos, Kline is well-used, but Stiller is absolutely wasted. I could have done his role.
