Ravvy takes in SPY GAME and OUT COLD!

Hey folks, Harry here with the RAVishing Ravvy, a rather dashing young man, who wears tights to screenings and leaps to and fro from the theater to the bathroom for excited breaks in his desire for his desires. Ravvy giggles quite a bit during movies due to his little Nitrous breather unit... actually a customized Thunderball prop he stole from U.A. But that was his way. Now he has his way with two very different films... Check it out....

Okay I guess I’m a sucker for any of the Scott bros. films, going into this film having seen the trailers and knowing the cast I knew I was not going to hate this film. The film stars two acting gods Brad "Pikey Jeffrey Tyler Goines Durden" Pitt and Robert "Sundancity" Redford. Now before I really get into the movie, I should mention I enjoyed the hell out of Enemy of the State, Top Gun, and Days of Thunder (as well as others) but if you didn’t like any of those films we probably are going to have a bit of a difference of opinion on this one.

The film is about a veteran CIA agent’s last day in the bureau which is complicated when a protege of his that he recruited has been jailed in China, the Chinese government will execute him in exactly twenty-four hours unless something is done. Quickly he notices that the agency’s main concern is their own political agenda and not the life of this protege/friend of his, the agent attempts to play his own game within the agency to find a way to get his protege out pulling out every possible option.

The one big surprise of the film is that it is mainly character driven, the trailers might lead you to believe that it is fast paced action thriller, when in reality it is more of a character analysis in the middle of the world of espionage. Most of the film is told through Robert Redford’s character’s flashback sequences of Brad Pitt’s character from recruitment to just about every single mission they ever embarked on together and every rule Pitt tried to push.

Brad Pitt gave a fantastic performance although he is somewhat just a MAIN supporting character, although I wouldn’t say he excelled from his past performances but it’s not like he’s going Cool World or anything. Robert Redford did a damn good job, fucking great compared to his campy read through in Last Castle. Catherine McCormick does a good job playing Pitt’s love interest in the film as well.

Spy Game is a great film, although not perfection. Most of my big complaints with the film is Tony Scott’s flash cuts that just get redundant as the film plays out, at one point during the beginning you are treated to a flash pan of an elevator going up and down just to get the same shot repeated five seconds later. Also the intro from the film seems like it was cut straight out of Enemy of the State, even the font seemed the same. Thats really the worst part of the film, so if you can handle several flashcuts and accompanied with fantastic but really POUNDING score at times then you should be able to handle Spy Game.

Think Clear and Present Danger, but directed by Tony Scott. I’d recommend it.

Out Cold. Opens Tomorrow

Earlier this year after viewing the trailer for this movie I exclaimed that someone would have to put a pistol against my head to get me to sit through this film. Well when I found out the only other thing screening tonight was Black Knight, I decided to clinch my teeth and just bite the bullet. You know it couldn’t be as bad as that piece of shit I had built it up to be in my head. It’s not like its Freddy Got Fingered Part Deux or anything, and it does not star Freddie Prinze Jr. It might not be a festering piece of doo-doo.

The introduction of the film began to confirm my worst fears that it was indeed a festering pile of dog doo-doo as the Alaskan redneck began to explain the pants-dropping origins of the town. Apparently the town was founded by this guy that had a penchant for skiing bare-assed or something to that effect. In fact most of the film really follows no storyline whatsoever it is just a bunch of kid’s partying and having fun while playing pranks on other friends or some lame attempts at raunchy humor. Although I must admit that as foul some of the potty humor got it actually garnered a few laughs at times. Eventually somewhat of a storyline begins to take shape as the million dollar man comes into town, bringing several investors in tow ready to buy the place up and transform it into a yuppie-paradise from top to bottom leaving the locals town-less. More academy award winning drama unfolds as one of the head townies played by Jason London finds out that one of The Million Dollar Man’s daughters is an old flame of his from Cancun Mexico that he has been obsessing about ever since she stood him up for a bike ride. Then of course no Love triangle would be complete without Jenny the other townie with everything in common with Jason, but he can’t get over his old flame first. Then add another one making it a Love Square, I guess, as the daughter is engaged to a crippled rich Doctor/Pilot/X-GamesAthelete. Somehow in the middle of all of this they find time to have sex with a Spa-jet, take a crap in a plastic cup, and even have Oral Sex with a polar bear.

Out Cold might have been a much better comedy if they had let them go all-out with the raunchy nasty humor, as it comes out a bit of a sanitized mess when it is toned down. So it suffers a bit of Caddyshack II syndrome, but overall its not a bad "Stupid Comedy". Although while watching, your mind might begin to wonder what better comedies you could be watching.
