Tarzan

This clip was packaged as a music video for the song "Stranger Like Me" by Phil Collins, who's doing the songs for Tarzan. Lots of recording studio footage of Phil, with quick glimpses of Rosie O'Donnell and Glen Close recording voices, all intercut with both rough and final animation from the film. The song was your typical upbeat Phil Collins but with a bit more drumming going on. I finally figured out why they picked Phil...it's a jungle film, and he's a drummer!

I've gotta say, although the Dinosaur stuff was impressive, this Tarzan stuff had me wanting to see more, now. Very visceral and quick-moving. A feral Tarzan runs/crawls leopard-style up and over tree trunks and branches, then leaps out and dives, limbs thrown back, down through a thick jungle canopy of trees (very cool).

The one thing that really struck me early on is how Tarzan has this really cool character design. All finely chisled nose and chin, with piercing, darting eyes. Damn if he's not a ringer for a young Bruce Campbell (though Bruce isn't doing the voice, Tony Goldwyn is).

There's also a nice bit where Tarzan is with Jane, he presses his hand up against hers for comparison, slowly uncurls his fingers from their ape-like bend, and spreads them out against hers. Detail like that really adds impact, and makes you glad they've got Glen Keane animating Tarzan.

Another scene with Jane has her about to be trampled on the jungle floor, as Tarzan literally swoops down and snags her by her belt, and she seems to have acquired the ability to fly!

I've tried my best to communicate that I was impressed by what I saw, so if it hasn't come across let's just say that if the rest of Dinosaur and Tarzan hold up to these clips I've seen, they'll both be big leaps in quality for Disney Feature Animation. Looks like they may be heading toward another rebirth. Cross your fingers. The Publisher

Then the Holy PizzaMan brought forth these goodies from Tarzan, which are quite obviously the property of Disney, and just go to illustrate 'The Publisher's' point about the chiseled look of Tarzan. I had one person tell me than in the pencil animation, he has a very Hal Foster style look to him. The long hair, the perfect ape-man poses. In fact this mystery person told me to look at the Tarzan and His Mate insert to see one shot. If you know the poster, you know the image. Here's the images...
