Jabba the Gut, talent agent of long ago, has this bit to throw in about the SGT. ROCK flick. Ok, first off Arnold should not play SGT ROCK, he should play HAGEN in Paul Verhoeven's CRUSADE. Under no circumstances should Arnold be allowed to play SGT ROCK. And if I so much as hear a whisper of a Rochner, then I might have to knock someone in Warners out of his or her's rocker. You damn dirty apes, learn damn you learn.
Back in '88 when I was a talent agent, I received a breakdown, listing the characters WB needed to cast for their Sgt. Rock pic. It was on the fast track ten years ago. Silver was set to produce, with McTiernan helming. Of note, the first character on the list was --
SGT. ROCK: ARNOLD SCHWARTZENEGGER
Now, some were obviously shocked by the choice of actors to portray the cigar-chewing ALL-AMERICAN during WWII in the ATLANTIC THEATRE. I mean, hell, an Austrian portraying an American, fighting on (presumably) German soil? The thick accent was a dead give away.
To stave off ridicule, WB posted a brief history of the character in the breakdown. It went something like: "His real last name is Rockner. He was born in Austria and lived there for many years until his family moved to the U.S." I almost busted a gut. Rockner???
As for the other characters, the list faithfully included everyone in Rock's platoon from the comics. As for Germans, the breakdown only described bit parts (i.e. GERMAN #1, GERMAN #2). Just thought you might find this interesting.
Cheers!
