This is for all you folks here in Austin and the immediate surrounding area... Across the country hard times have hit all year long... amplified by the terror of September 11. However, I'll be damned if I stand idly by while the things that make my city in particular as cool as I feel it is... fall victim to the economic shake and bake of the time.
Often times you hear about the Alamo Drafthouse here in town... it is truly my favorite movie theater on the planet. I've told you about ATOMIC CITY in the past. Well this time I'll tell you about a fantastic place here in town that is every bit as special as Atomic City is for toys, as the Alamo Drafthouse is for film... well... ADVENTURES IN CRIME & SPACE is to books. Specifically pulp fiction, science fiction.
You walk into the place and instantly you smell the pulp... the scent of paper dotted with pennies per word. The works of Chandler and Burroughs and Stark and Asprin... Lovecraft and Gaiman. They have authors come in to do signings and readings... They stock the latest reprints of classic dime store fiction... And they stock old Ace Doubles... old 10 cent covers... old sci-fi and horror digests... and while you search through the store, when you hear the door open and close, you can be assured that person will be a pulp literate soul... Sure they could very well have a different area of pulp that they would consume, but they won't be in ADVENTURES IN CRIME & SPACE if they didn't know that that was the place to be.
