Hey folks, Harry here with the Kampbell-Kid chiming in with his mmmmm mmmm good look at BONES. Now, I don't know about you, but the second I heard Snoop Dogg was going to be a horrorshow fella, I just kinda started giggling. Snoop has always struck me as Eddie Murphy's evil brother, that Eddie was playing with the help of Rick Baker. But surely he wouldn't take a pay cut to play the part of Snoop Dogg in BONES? Would he? Well read on and find out...
Hey it's Kampbell-Kid,
I just got out of another press screening this morning where I beared great witness to the most anticipated oscar hopefull film of this fall... BONES. Ok so I lied, I've been really waiting for The One... but anyway as I woke up this morning I realized that I had to build up this print of Bones and sit with the press to watch what I never had a desire to see. Cept I was actually mildly suprised with it...
Spoiler Warning!
Upon watching it I felt drawn back to the early days of the "A Nightmare On Elm Street" series films part 1 through 3 back in the day or even "Candyman". Bones is an idencial copy of Freddy Kruger or Candyman, cept it's all in Snoop Dogg's stiz-yle, ya dig. Pimped out costumes, gold chains and diamond rings, long white strech limos, afros and hairweaves abundant over amber waves of jive talking and not to mention PAM GRIER!!! She's so cool... she's just err PAM GRIER!! Nuff said. The film over all wasn't bad, it had some cliche jumps and laughs. The best laugh the press and I got out of it was when Bones cut this guys head off and kept his soul still alive in the head which you didn't know until it cuts back to a scene where the head is still alive talkin 70's jive and sayin how screwed up it is that he's still left alive with no body!! Kinda monty pythonish. It was the best part!! Not to mention this movie just cracked me up with it's slap in the face of all the horror films we've been subjected to where the cliche black character always gets killed... well they began the movie with two dumb white dudes getting killed in an amusing scene and later on this girlfriend of one of the drug dealers who's this mega playboy playmate blonde bimbo that wears practicly near nothing giggles, swirls her gum around her finger/tongue and talks ditzy while walkin around slapping her ass with smoldering tempttress looks becuase her ass is "packin base". Kudos to the writing on those characters... very Kevin Smith like and a slap in the face of past horror films. The press and I ate it up laughing!!!
So what's the story? Well the story is all Freddy Kruger like in how he comes back.. in 1979 Bones was a man who cared and loved his neighborhood. He kept people out of trouble, gave money to the needy and watched it like family. However, every yin has it's yang... some locals turn to the new wave of the future... drug dealing. They take up space in a apt building which forshadows throughout the film as the resting place of Bones in the future. The locals obsessed with getting into drug dealing try to swindle Bones into getting into the action, but Bones wants no part of it. He dosen't want his neighborhood to go downhill... so the drug dealers disgruntled by his decision kill Bones and bury him in the basement of the building. In the present, the neighborhood is downhill now because of the drugs. People stay away from the building and have silly little nursery rhymes about the legend of Bones a la Elm Street like. Some kids obtain the building and try to turn it into a night club. I'm sure you can guess the rest of the film from here on... Bones comes back from the dead and all Crow like goes after those that killed him and those that witnessed his murder without helping him.
The cast itself? Well Snoop Dogg's acting wasn't bad except towards the end when he kept trying to do this evil laugh that kept falling flat and lame, made you feel uncomfortable watching the scene. But it did have all the Snoop style you grew up in the 90's loving... his slow jive talk with utter calm and cool to it. Pam Grier was just her awesome classic self, nuff said. The other actors were the cliche young cast with attitude and dumb as a box of rocks as they get killed one by one.
In a nutshell this film was basicly just "Nightmare On Elm Street" rolled up in a phat spliff and dipped in a cheep forty ounce without the respect of being dressed in the crumpled paper bag... mkay. Translation... it wasn't original at all!! It was Snoop Dogg in a stereotyped story setting dressed in a Freddy Kruger storyline. If you love the old Elm Street movies or Snoop Dogg then you'll get a guilty pleasure out of it, ya dig! :)
Ciao!
