First Test Screening of H20: HALLOWEEN 20 YEARS LATER

I have two reviews for ya, the first one is fairly spoiler free, and the second one is spoiler filled. And both are positive. I have also received about 15 positive mini reviews that... well I wanna see this movie so bad it hurts. In fact I feel like beating up on Josh Hartnett tomorrow, and holding him ransom till I see the movie... yeah..yeah...that's the ticket... Man, this screening sounds like it was wild. So here's the first review.. from Mr Iguana...

I attended an unbeleavable first screening of Halloween H20 aka Halloween 7 20 years later, staring Jamie Lee. I'm thrilled to say that this new movie is the greatest Halloween since part 2, which I know isn't saying much, because the others sucked so badly but this one makes up for all the problems with 3-6. This really is part 3. From start to finish it was just a mind-blowing movie. And although they seemed to tone Mike Myers down a little and made him a little more caring toward people, it still had the energy that part 1 had. Yes, I'm comparing it to part 1 which is the greatest horror movie of all time! It is just as good! Despite its cheep and lame opening scene it is still great. I don't want to give too much of the plot away because it is full of suprises but I will tell you this: Jamie Lee playes her old character 20 years older, under a new name with a 17 year old son. She is now Dean of a private school and it is getting very close to Halloween night.

Needless to say that Mike Myers tracks her down and begins to knock people off one-by-one trying to get closer to Jamie Lee. The last 45 minutes is basicly Jamie and Mike in a fight to the finish that is soooooo fantastic that it left the crowd screaming for 5 full minutes. YOu will be so satisfied with the movie's final scenes that you will have a whole new respect for the series that you'll consider it a trilogy. I swear!

Oh and Mike Myers (the actor) has a cameo on the TV. A scene from "So I married an Axe Murderer"

This reviewer wrote this review up after seeing a film, you and I would kill to see. In fact, we'd put on a rather bland, DATA-like mask, and slaughter people left and right in really cool ways. I'd even take a knitting needle in the eye. The reviewer has actually divided the review into two pieces, the review, and a plot summary. In the plot summary, he gets quite intense in describing everything. This has EXTREME SPOILERS. However, until you see a countdown from 10, don't worry... you won't read anything you don't want to.. Agent Otto here liked the film, and thought it was the best HALLOWEEN since the original. In his initial review part he does reveal the 'set-up', the basic wheres and whens that the film starts at. Here's the review....

This is Agent Otto checking in with info on the first screening of H20: Halloween 20 Years Later. I attended the very first test audience screening last night. In a nutshell, the film was pretty good considering the history of lackluster Halloween sequels. It may very well be the best one since the original Halloween. I would recommend it to any horror fan, as long as they know they shouldn't get their hopes up too high. Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie Strode, and of course Michael Myers returns to hunt her and her seventeen year old son down. The film takes place at a Catholic boarding school, of sorts, where Jamie Lee is the head mistress and her son is a student. While the rest of the kids are away for a Halloween weekend vacation, he and his friends stay behind to have a private party of their own, unbeknownst to Jamie Lee and her school counselor boyfriend, played by Adam Arkin, who also have to stay behind to care for the school. What follows is mostly obvious, but it doesn't take the same path to that end that you might expect.

Ultimately, the film is predictable, as most horror films are, but what I liked most about this one is that things didn't happen exactly when you expected them to, or how you expected them to. There are a few curveballs thrown in there, which help keep the suspense up. However, it is not as creepy or errie as Halloween 1, but there is a good amount of bloodshed (more than Scream, for instance) and there is certainly enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. The test audience I was part of delivered a surprising amount of loud screams at the appropriate places, and just one disappointing sigh towards an awkward scene near the end. However when it was all over, there was thunderous applause. Based on the success of recent horror films, the fact that there isn't really an oversaturation of the genre yet, and that this is a horror with name recognition and Jamie Lee Curtis reprising a popular role, it should do really big box office.

The acting in the film is good. Jamie Lee is particularly good in her role as the messed up victim, trying to live a normal life after 20 years. Once she and Michael see each other again eye to eye in one of the better scenes in the movie, she snaps and really toughens up and goes after him with a vengeance. At one point, the film takes on her POV as she goes to hunt down Michael. That was really cool, as it is usually the other way around. L.L. Cool J is also very good as the comic relief character. He plays a security guard who is at the school when Myers arrives. Janet Leigh is there too, I guess so they can have a fun, insider credit, but she really doesn't do much as one of the school administrators, outside of giving Jamie Lee some "motherly advice" at one point, which is kinda cute.

The film is being put out by Dimension Films (Scream, Scream 2) and is directed by Steve Miner. It is based on a treatment by Kevin Williamson. All of this and more technical info about the cast & crew can already be found on the imdb, so I won't go into those technical details.

But I will go into the gory details. This is where the spoilers are, so don't read on if you don't want the fun to be ruined.

Ok, here they are....

The film itself is set on Halloween night, 20 years after the first movie. As the movie begins, we notice that the house of the late Dr. Lumis has been broken into. His wife(?) returns to discover this, and gets help next door from two young men. As they investigate, they notice that the Doctor's office has been turned inside out, papers lying everywhere, but the rest of the house is in order. In a good scene, Mrs. Lumis(?) discovers the other two boys have been murdered, and then Michael Myers appears on-screen for the first time, and slits her throat with a knife. After the opening credits, the scene shifts to a boarding school where Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), now known as Keri Tate after faking her own death and relocating, who is also now an alcoholic, dependent on an entire medicine cabinet full of prescription drugs just to get by, wakes up from a nightmare flashback from Halloween 1. Her son, John, helps her out of bed and the two discuss her being so overprotective of him. She won't let him go away for the weekend with the rest of the school. Because of this, he and his friends decide to all stay behind and have a secret Halloween party of their own.

It is now Halloween night. Before the school lets out, we get some foreshadowing during an English class taught by Mrs. Tate where they are discussing Frankenstein. One of the students points out how the doctor must ultimately face the creature in order to put to rest all of the horror it has caused him. With that, Jamie Lee decides to let her son go on the trip after all. However, not to spoil the plans he has with his friends, he lies to his mom about going, and stays behind anyway. At dusk, the only people on campus are the four kids, a security guard played by L.L. Cool J, Keri Tate and her secret boyfriend, Will the school counselor, played by Adam Arkin.

During those earlier scenes of story development, they cut away to a scene where Michael Myers drives to an abandoned rest stop in the car he used to escape the Lumis House murders at the beginning of the film in order to steal another car from a woman and her little girl, who have stopped to go to the bathroom. There is some suspense as both the lady and her daughter are in individual stalls and Myers enters the bathroom, but he doesn't kill them. Instead he takes the woman's car keys from her purse on the ground. That scene seems a little out of place, but I guess they needed some suspenseful scene to happen after the opening sequence and before the other murders begin.

With his new car, Michael Myers goes to the school and begins to hunt down the kids. While they are in the dormitory, the first kid goes off on his own to get a corkscrew. In the first of the scenes where what you expect doesn't exactly happen, the corkscrew he gets falls into the sink. He notices it has a garbage disposal, so he carefully reaches in to get it. Michael Myers appears, and you kind of get the feeling that the poor kid's hand is about to become chopped meat. Alas, he retrieves the corkscrew without any trouble, but as he turns around, he gets attacked. When his girlfriend comes looking for him, she suddenly hears the dumbwaiter get activated. When she opens the door, she discovers her boyfriend dead, with the corkscrew stuck in his neck. She screams, and Michael Myers appears again. She tries to hide in the dumbwaiter, but he slashes at her leg as the device begins to take her away. As she crawls slowly from the dumbwaiter, dragging her bloody bad leg across the floor, we see that Michael has caught up with her. He steps on her neck and proceeds to butcher her with his trademark kitchen knife. We don't see the knife enter her, but there are repeated strikes, more blood appearing on the blade after each one. At this point John Tate and his girlfriend start to worry when they hear some noises, so they investigate themselves. They find their friends dead and begin to run away. Michael Myers chases after them. He actually catches up to them at one point, and again, you may expect another murder, but John manages to strike first and he stabs and repeatedly punches Myers in order to buy more time for an escape. Myers doesn't stay down long, and he continues to chase the couple to a dormitory.

While this is going on, Keri and Will discover the phone lines are dead, just as she is telling him all about her past and who she really is. In a panic, she notices all of her son's bags are still in his room. She now knows something is wrong, and that he isn't at the school trip. They begin to search the dorms as well.

The two couples meet up just as Michael Myers is about to reach John and his girlfriend in a great, suspenseful scene. The two kids are banging on a door to get in before Myers catches them, when it does open, it is Kate and Will who lets them in, and just as Myers is upon them, Kate slams the door shut in his face, and through the glass window in the door, the two face each other, eye to eye, for the first time in twenty years. The audience really erupted for that shot.

Michaels does find an alternate entry into the house, and it is at this point where Keri takes over, and starts calling the shots to her kid and her boyfriend. She instructs the kids to hide in a closet as she and Will take a gun to find Michael. They see a shadow ahead and Will open fires at it. As he goes to inspect the dropped body, he realizes he shot the security guard by accident. Before Keri can react, Michael appears and guts Will in a great, gory sequence. He lifts his body up using the knife firmly implanted into his stomach. With horror, Keri takes the kids and runs out to the car so that they can get away. However, Michael is hot on their trail. In the movies only real awkward moment, the one where the audience sighed, Myers catches up to them while they fumble with the car keys, then it seems he stops short, looks right into the car window, but does nothing. Then they take off with him standing there looking stupid. Maybe they can clean that up in the editing.

When the car reaches the school gate, Keri instructs her son's girlfriend to drive him to a neighboring house and call an ambulance and the police. Keri opens the gate for them, then closes it behind and shoots the controlling mechanism, thus, locking her inside the school grounds with Michael alone....for the final confrontation.

What happens next is very good, and I just don't think I can give it away. You'll just have to wait til the film hits theaters to see who comes out on top.

Take care and keep up the awesome work!

This is Agent Otto signing out!
