Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
I don't know where Harry found the little guy, but Piotro Pinkie is back with another review. This time, he's covering a film I've never heard of, which is a good thing. That is, after all, the point of the site.
Sounds cool, too...
One of the benefits of being a little person is that we have short syndicates across the world. Literally they stretch to every pocket. Because of that, I occasionally get something that is pretty damn cool, and when I do, I have to wonder why in the hell did I get it. MY WIFE IS A GANGSTER is one of those things. From what I can dig up, it was just recently released in Korea and what I saw was a pretty good quality bootleg. When I was given it, I thought the guy who tossed it my way was smoking crack. "You gotta watch it.", he said. "It's some crazy Korean Hybrid of LA FEMME NIKITA, TRUE LIES, and even MEET THE PARENTS". I was like, okay, yeah, sure it is, Shall I warm up your heroin spoon for you. He then of course whipped out the obligatory, trendy comparison to say/make these days. "It's even got some rad fight scenes that rival CROUCHING TIGER.". Whatever. I didn't really buy a word he said to me, because really how many times in the past year have we heard that? Exactly. Well you know what? I'm gonna tell you guys the exact same thing. This is one, that actually deserves a good amount of that comparison. Really. It's not poetic like CTHD, but is damn groovy in it's own right, and after seeing it, I hope peeps in the U.S. get a chance to as well. So, yeah, anyway, what's it about....
...It's set in the Korean mafia underworld and it starts off with a pretty tight fight scene in the pouring rain. These two guys are getting the shit kicked out of them by a large group when SHIN, the lead girl, leaps in the center of all of them, and pretty much lays it down kung fu style. So yeah, anyway....
*****SPOILERS*****
...We find out that Shin is a damn hot mafia girl who is rising quickly in the underworld. We also learn that she has been trying to track down her long lost sister for years since they were separated from each other at the orphanage they were raised in. Soon, she finds her sister in a terminal cancer ward with very little time left to live. The sister is psyched to finally be reunited with her sister but is upset when she finds out that Shin has no husband or children. She begs Shin to get married and have kids before she dies so that she can die in peace. Shin breaks down, and agrees. Of course, it ain't that easy because...
...Shin’s main rival gang, the White Sharks, are trying to take over her gang’s territory. So Shin has to defend her turf while trying to find a husband, which ain't simple because Shin has no experience with men. Eventually, Shin’s henchmen stumble upon a ridiculous civil servant named Kang. He's got no people skills, and even less women skills.(like Moriarty) The henchmen decide that this yo is the perfect dupe. He's the only guy stupid enough to marry Shin, who even though she is damn hot, all men fear for obvious reasons. Shin and Kang are quickly introduced and Shin proposes marriage in no time. Kang can’t believe that this hot girl wants to marry him and and quickly accepts. Before we know it, we're at the wedding where Shin's henchmen have to fight off an attack from the rival gang with out the husband noticing. (like the whole true lies husband and wife angle but reversed.) On the wedding night, Kang’s getting his groove on. Trying to be all suave to Shin...which doesn't work. Any advance he makes on her is met with unexpected, yet funny, violence. (Again, kind of like when Moriarty tries to pick up on the ladies.) That Monday morning when he returns to work, everyone laughs at him and wants to know where he got the black eye, he bows his head and keeps to himself....
...After a while Kang starts to suspect that Shin is leading some kind of secret life. He also gets fed up with her beating the shit out of him and he grows balls and decides that he's going to divorce her. Of course, at the same time, the White Sharks make their big assault and Shin is nearly killed. Kang visits her in the hospital and learns of her secret and that of course, even though he's put up with a ton of shit from her, he actually loves her. Ain't that sweet, folks. Anyway, the balls Kang grew earlier really grow, and he decides that he's gonna go get revenge on the White Sharks. And yes, in the middle of the big fight, Shin joins him and they fight along side each other in a rad freaking fight. They win, he becomes a member of the gang, and he finally gets to make out with his wife....
*****END SPOILERS*****
...So that's it. It's a pretty simple story, but done well with great action mixed up with some humour that even ends up being pretty universal, which is where, to me, a lot of Foreign films fail, and why I think this could actually cross over into the U.S. and do damn good if marketed right. Which is what I hope they freakin do. Why? Because, I've heard that some yo studio is in talks to remake this movie into thier franchise or whatever and try to capatilize off of Rush Hour's success. Why? Most likely, they'll just fuck it up, water it down, and ruin the action sequences. Just freakin buy the rights and release it as is, with subtitles, of course. But alas, that probably won't happen. Anyway, if this sounds cool to you, try to track down some VCD's of it or whatever. It's well worth the 20 bucks IMHO. And because I'm such a nice little guy, I even took the time to track down some trailers and clips for you that own.
Anyway, until my next shittily written review, you can reach me...
And there's even a music video (with some crazy group rapping. hehe)
