What Is TRIBUTE, And When Can You See It'!

Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.

What is it with George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh? They're like two halves of one gloriously strange brain these days. Their SECTION EIGHT production company just reupped their deal for another three years, and they've got a number of films coming out in the next year or so.

Just recently, Warner Bros. released ROCK STAR, a film that Clooney helped produce about a guy from a tribute band who gets a shot at real stardom. That was based loosely on a true story, but now it looks like Soderbergh has his hand in a documentary that is the true story of a number of cover bands. One of the directors wrote me a letter about it. Check this out:

Drew,

Wanted to let you and Harry know about a new rockumentary that is being Executive Produced by Steven Soderbergh!

It's called Tribute, and follows the stories of several tribute bands and their fans. Tribute bands try to emulate rock supergroups like Kiss, Queen, Journey and Judas Priest! It's a funny, disturbing and human look at rockers trying to live out their dreams by imitating others.

Tribute is premiering at the AFI film festival in Hollywood on Saturday, November 3rd. A major campaign to promote the screening is about to begin, but the word is not out yet so anything you print on Ain't It Cool will be exclusive for at least a few days!

Thanks, Rich. Hopefully I'll get a chance to see this one soon. Love the stills on the website, and the subject matter definitely warrants a deeper look. Documentaries like this are my favorites, anthropological looks at subsets of modern culture. I hope this lives up to the promise of the idea.

Oh, and sorry if you thought this was a story about Tenacious D. We'll have more on them in the weeks ahead as well. For now, though, we're talking about a different TRIBUTE...

"Moriarty" out.
