Hey folks, Harry here with a look at that movie about that fatass Paltrow! I love that I get to say that about an amazingly gorgeous slim lady! But in this case... it's the actual appeal of the film! The trailer was pretty darn outrageous, and them wacky brothers behind this thing have sanity issues... But I hear that the people that work with them are even more disgusting than they are. I've heard some of these people don't even use knives in spoons except in the bedroom. But from the sound of this review, it is funny as hell... here ya go....
Hey Harry-
Batman282 checking in and though I am kinda nervous cause I want to do a good job with this review...well here goes:
SHALLOW HAL (8 stars outta 10)
I enjoyed this movie thouroughly. One of the Farrley Bros.' better films to date. I thought OSMOSIS JONES coulda been a lot better, and ME, MYSELF & IRENE was no follow-up to DUMB & DUMBER...This one showed some pinache though. Jack Black and Gwenyth Paltrow were great in their roles. Now, personally I don't thin Gwenyth Paltrow has done anything I would consider fabulous (she's real purdy, but the movies she's done I have not felt were entirely fitting to her). But here, she shines as Rosemary, the *slightly* overweight Burn Ward nurse slash Peace Corps volunteer. Jack Black plays Hal, the overtly shallow man who only looks at women who are super-model status because his father ( a preacher who is dying of something we'll never know about) is on an morphine-induced high when he tells his then eight year old son that he needs to find only supremely attractive women to date. So poor Hal, who can't find one of these women that will like him back, even after his friend Mauricio! (! Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame, who plays a very George Kastanza-like pal) takes him to a local bar to meet women. The only big problem I had with this movie was Tony Robbins....first, he just POPS up at Hal's place of wo rk doing something on his tour. This is where the two get stuck in an elevator and Tony Robbins hypnotizes Hal into seeing women for their "inner-beauty" rather than just the ones who look like BritneyMichelleHeidiRebecca RomijnPfeiferSpearsKulm....the amalgm of women Hal would like to date.
To speed things up a bit.... bottom line, Hal sees Rosemary walking on the sidewalk but doesn't see the 300-plus woman, he sees the 90 pound Gwenyth walking, after following her into a women's clothing store and saying some things that Rose confuses as put-downs (actually compliments that dont come out right due to the fact that Hal only sees the skinny inner beautifed Rose). The two start seeing eachother more often and find they really like eachother. Even though everyone around Hal doesnt see what he sees and tries to disuade him from staying in the relationship (even Rose's father, who doesn't believe Hal loves his daughter), he sticks by her.
Some gross out jokes ensue (just think vaseline, and a dogs' tail) after Mauricio finds out how to "cure" Hal (and after another poorly acted scene on Tony Robbins' part). Hal then tries to make it up to rosemary (even though at one point the now plus-size beauty of his life walks by him and he says "Hi, how yah doin'?" because he doesn't recognize her, then proceeds to call her cell phone to talk to her.) And though the ending is fairly predictable it's a nice ending none the less.
So now that I've bored you all to tears with my review, I have to say its one of the better Farrley movies out there. So, definitely catch it in the theatre if u can (but see it with friends, its a good movie to see with your pals) and if you are too stubborn to see it in the theatre, YOU BETTER RENT IT WHEN IT COMES OUT!!!
