the new film from jim sheridan , the director of my left foot and IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, and Daniel Day Lewis
the setting -ireland ,now
the acting-Lewis is excellent as usual and Emily Watson has the showier role as she is the one who changes throughout the film.
the story- the pace is slow in the beginning as the revelations of Danny (lewis) himself and what he is entangled in just from his past comes out slowly. The main barrier is that his sweetheart ,from 14 years ago , before he went to prison , is now married to another prisoner who is in the IRA. Her Father is the local if not leader of the IRA though that is not explained fully. Her father wants to start the peace process and a cease fire but the younger IRA guys and Lewis 's peers want to still strike back. Danny"s position , which got him in trouble in prison and followed him to the outside ,was to be on his own alone in his silence and not to be involved in petty politics.
When he comes out he is just that , alone to start boxing again .When he goes back to what was his gym , and finds a lame rec center. He starts up his boxing club and then the movie finally gets going at about 45 minutes in when he finds a duffel bag of plastique explosives And throws it in the river. hey no spoilers but the rest of the movie is the romance between lewis and Watson and the barriers they overcome together and inidividually .
the pace is slow and the romance is very low key as it based upon how the two in love are willing to risk which is thier lives. can't say much more without spoiling it .
The music- very little throughout. the action- the boxing was unrealistic though it was done it silence except for the punches that are thrown
