Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Last time Quint was here at the Moriarty Labs, he spent hours and hours pleasuring himself to his DVD copy of SLEEPAWAY CAMP. I finally had to turn the fire hose on the poor bastard. Now it looks like you can share his shame in public when the Alamo Drafthouse screens the film. Here's the crustiest seaman who ever harbored impure thoughts about Pamela Springsteen to fill you in... on the details.
Ahoy there, squirties. 'Tis I, the crusty ol' seaman, Quint, here
to announce to you folks a super cool event happening October 18-20 at the
Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX. Myself, along with Tim League, grand poo-bah
of the Alamo Drafthouse, and Jeff Hayes over at www.sleepawaycampmovies.com
have set up a screening of one of my all time favorite '80s slasher flicks,
Sleepaway Camp with director Robert Hiltzik and star Felissa Rose in
attendance.

Those that have seen Sleepaway Camp know how cool it is. The film
is a step above most of the other flicks of that post Friday the 13th
campground slasher era. Sure, it's cheesy as all hell, but goddamn if it
doesn't transcend its genre and by the end of the film establishes its own
unique identity that has been copied by many other films since.

Set in a summer camp, this film follows a young girl named Angela and her cousin, Ricky, as the camp is being terrorized by a faceless stalker who inventively kills many of the campers and counselors. You'll be sure who the killer is at one moment, then change your mind the next. It's a spectacular series of red herrings that all culminate in an ending you won't soon forget.
I first saw this film when I was 14 and staying with my
grandparents in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They went to bed at... like... 5:30
in the evening, so in the early afternoon they'd take me to Blockbuster and
let me rent 3 or 4 movies to keep me entertained at night. I'd make a
bee-line to the horror section and see what I could find. One of the gems I
walked out of that Blockbuster with was Sleepaway Camp.

I was drawn to the video box cover art of a white tennis shoe being impaled by a bloody knife. The movie seriously fucked me up. It's not really that scary... not like Exorcist scary or anything, but there's one scene... and those that have seen the film know which one I'm talking about... one scene that stuck with me and gave me the chills.
The movie is full of gore, jump scares, '80s nostalgia, an ungodly
amount of homosexual undertones, memorable characters (if you don't remember
Aunt Martha or Angela when all is said and done I'll eat the Orca) and on
top of all that, it has not only a great score, but a terrific theme song
that has been on my MP3 playlist for a good year now. This flick is out and
out fun and along with The Big Lebowski and Rocky Horror Picture Show, it's
my most often watched DVD.

The movie screens at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in downtown
Austin, TX October 18-20th, midnight each night, in glorious 35mm. Felissa
(Angela) Rose and director Robert Hiltzik will be there each night to answer
all your Sleepaway Camp questions. Tickets are $12/$10 student and will be
available through the Alamo's website starting September 20th.

Many thanks to Jeff and SleepawayCampMovies.com for the photos! This is Quint hoping you fine folks will meet me at the Alamo... after the social...
