Hey, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab.
Okay... you know the drill. Take one story visually, chase with grain of salt, shake, and chill.
Hey Harry -
I just got back from the opening of Spike, an art exhibit by Douglas Coupland that coincides with the release of his new book, All Families are Psychotic. As if meeting the author of Microserfs wasn't cool enough, who do you think coincidentally walked in to say hi?
Spike Jonze.
He walked right up to Douglas, and started talking to him about copious character notes and ideas he had scrawled on a crumpled up piece of looseleaf, but Coupland had to get back to signing, so they promised to talk later. After I got my book signed, I went down to the bar to chat with Spike. After much stumbling, stuttering, and heaping of (well-deserved) fanboy praise on Mr. Jonze, I left, skipping back to my dorm high on the adrenaline rush of meeting two creative idols and inspirations to me.
On the way back, though, it hit me - I remembered reading an article about how Coupland sold the movie rights for All Families... to Michael Stipe's production company, Single Cell. Single Cell also happened to produce a little film you may have heard of - Being John Malkovitch. You know, the one with "that guy who was in the jewel thief movie."
Could the Coupland book be Spike's next project, once Adaptation is all finished? At this point, it very well may be just conjecture and wishful thinking on my part. But damn, that would be some cool stuff.
I thought you might be interested in this li'l developent. If you're in NYC any time soon, its definitely worth the trek to SoHo to check out; I have a couple pictures of the green army men and japaneese shampoo bottles from the exhibit on my page too.
Later
Nick
Spike Jonze is one of those guys, like David Fincher, who interests me at this point no matter what they're doing. I'll definitely be following up on this to see if there's any weight to the rumor. In the meantime, anyone familiar with the source material? I haven't read it yet, and am curious...
"Moriarty" out.
